The temporomandibular joint (more commonly known as the TMJ) is the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. Sometimes it can be a source of significant discomfort and pain, especially if you clench or grind your teeth during sleep.

Many patients are plagued by pain from their jaw joint, often accompanied by popping and clicking noises. Others grind their teeth at night as they sleep, which causes pain and soreness in the TMJ and places excessive force on their teeth.

Both situations can affect your quality of life and productivity, especially if you experience increased headaches, earache-like pain, tooth pain, or tooth sensitivity.

TMJ Pain Treatment

At McKay's Mill Dental, we can relieve your TMJ pain and help you get back to living a pain-free life. An occlusal splint, also known as a nightguard or mouthguard, is often the answer many people need to find relief from jaw joint pain. The device is a custom mouthpiece that prevents the teeth from grinding against each other and minimizes stress on the jaw joint, which is often the cause of TMJ/TMD pain in many patients.

Dental Implants

If you’ve lost natural teeth, you know the dramatic impact that it has on your appearance, comfort, and quality of life. You may find it painful or difficult to chew certain foods, and speaking clearly is a challenge.

There are other oral health risks, too, such as the increased risk of cavities and infections. That is why Dr. Avrit always recommends replaces missing teeth to support a healthy, comfortable quality of life.

We offer several tooth replacement options for patients in the Franklin and Nashville TN areas, with the most long-lasting and comprehensive being dental implants.

How Dental Implants Work

A dental implant is a titanium post that Dr. Avrit places surgically into the area of a missing tooth. After the bone is given time to heal around the implant, we may then place a crown, bridge, or denture on top of the implant.

Dental implants offer other benefits, too; they’re not susceptible to tooth decay, and we don’t have to alter adjacent teeth to replace a missing tooth. A dental implant is also an alternative to a bridge or partial removable denture and can also stabilize a complete denture for ultimate stability.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you have one or more missing teeth and are considering replacing them with dental implants, we would love to tell you more! Please contact our Franklin dental office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Avrit to discuss your tooth replacement needs.

Invisalign and Traditional Braces

If you are looking for orthodontic treatment options for all ages, you’ve come to the right place! Trained in the United States Air Force in orthodontics (braces), Dr. Matt Avrit has been straightening teeth of both children and adults for many years!

At our dental office in Franklin, we offer traditional braces, clear braces, Invisalign, and many types of retainers. So whether you have just a couple of teeth that you need to have straightened or a mouthful of crooked teeth, Dr. Avrit can provide you with the most cost-effective option to achieve the straight, beautiful smile you have always dreamed of.

Invisalign Clear Braces for Adults

Invisalign is a popular option to straighten crooked teeth because treatment is convenient and comfortable. With Invisalign, we use clear plastic aligners that you can remove to brush and floss and eat meals. Invisalign corrects many of the same problems as traditional orthodontics, and treatment takes about 12-18 months on average.

Traditional Braces for Kids and Adults

Traditional orthodontics (braces) use metal or ceramic brackets and wires attached to your teeth to guide them into a straight position. Dr. Avrit commonly recommends traditional braces for children and adults with more complex alignment or bite issues than we can address with Invisalign.

Tooth Extraction

For some people, the dentist’s office can be a scary place, especially if your teeth hurt or if it has been a long time since you have been to the dentist. Dr. Avrit knows that, and he offers three different levels of sedation to make your trips to the dentist as easy and stress-free as possible.

Mild Sedation with Nitrous Oxide

The first level is nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas. When you inhale the gas, it calms your nerves down significantly. Another benefit of nitrous is that when it is removed, you go back to feeling normal, and you can drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation for Greater Relaxation

The second option is oral sedation, which is a series of pills that you take leading up to your appointment. This option significantly decreases your anxiety level and can also lead to some memory loss about your visit.

IV Sedation for Deep Anxiety and Longer Procedures

The third option is IV sedation, which Dr. Avrit frequently uses when he takes out wisdom teeth or extremely nervous patients. You should choose this option if you absolutely do not want to remember anything about your visit.

If you elect for the second or third option, you will be required to have someone bring you and take you home because you will still feel the effects after your appointment is over. Feel free to contact Dr. Avrit if you want one of these options for your appointment.
