Tooth Extraction

As dentists, we do everything we can to help you keep all your teeth for a lifetime. However, sometimes it's in the best interest of your overall oral health to remove a decayed, infected, or damaged tooth.

Dr. Matt Avrit and his dental team are compassionate and caring and understand that it can be stressful to learn that you need a tooth extraction, so please put your fears to rest. We work together to ensure that you have a pain-free, comfortable procedure.

Why Our Dentist Recommends Tooth Extraction

At McKay’s Mill Dental, we have numerous ways to save a badly damaged or decayed tooth. However, if a tooth is hopelessly beyond repair, the only safe option is to remove it. This can occur for several reasons:

  • A tooth is decayed beyond what we can repair with a crown or filling
  • A tooth has broken or fractured below the gumline and can’t be restored
  • Advanced periodontal disease has loosened a tooth, and we can't save it
  • A tooth infection has advanced so far that we can’t resolve it with a root canal
  • An incoming wisdom tooth is crowding existing teeth

Other instances where Dr. Avrit might need to remove a tooth are for dental implant placement or to prepare for orthodontics or denture placement.

Sedation Dentistry Ensures Your Comfort

Our concern for your comfort is evident in everything we do. We know that many people dislike dental visits, which creates anxiety that prevents them from getting the care they need. At McKay’s Mill Dental, we offer sedation dentistry to fit your needs.

Nitrous Oxide or “Laughing Gas”

Nitrous oxide is a gas that you inhale. It helps you feel very calm and drowsy during your procedure, and the sights and sounds around you fade into the background. We’ll monitor you throughout your procedure, and when we turn off the nitrous, you’ll start to feel like yourself again and can even drive yourself from your appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation involves taking medication before your appointment to help you relax. By taking it about an hour beforehand, you’ll arrive at our office feeling very calm and ready for your appointment. Since the sedative stays in your system for several hours, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

If you have deep anxiety and nitrous and oral sedation won’t work for you, we recommend IV sedation. This is because IV sedation puts you in a semi-conscious state, meaning that we can communicate with you, but you won’t be aware of what’s happening around you or remember much about the details afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

For some people, the dentist’s office can be a scary place, especially if your teeth hurt or if it has been a long time since you have been to the dentist. Dr. Avrit knows that, and he offers three different levels of sedation to make your trips to the dentist as easy and stress-free as possible.

Mild Sedation with Nitrous Oxide

The first level is nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas. When you inhale the gas, it calms your nerves down significantly. Another benefit of nitrous is that when it is removed, you go back to feeling normal, and you can drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation for Greater Relaxation

The second option is oral sedation, which is a series of pills that you take leading up to your appointment. This option significantly decreases your anxiety level and can also lead to some memory loss about your visit.

IV Sedation for Deep Anxiety and Longer Procedures

The third option is IV sedation, which Dr. Avrit frequently uses when he takes out wisdom teeth or extremely nervous patients. You should choose this option if you absolutely do not want to remember anything about your visit.

If you elect for the second or third option, you will be required to have someone bring you and take you home because you will still feel the effects after your appointment is over. Feel free to contact Dr. Avrit if you want one of these options for your appointment.
